As one of the newer guys on the tournament coverage crew, the first victory I was able to witness in person was Randall Tharp winning the Bull Shoals/Norfork event. I've always known that something special happens to an angler as he locks into the pattern on Championship Sunday to win a 4-day event. I just hadn't ever watched it happen. Randall Tharp overcame a difficult 2015 season with a tremendous showing in 2016, including this win. I was in a boat just 20 yards from Tharp as his final day came together in an impressive manner; just as I knew it would something special happened and he couldn't make a bad move.

It was Tharp's turn to win -- he knew it and I knew it. What made me respect him and his victory even more is the level of emotion he showed back stage before weighing his fish. He knew he had the right fish and could barely keep it together as numerous members of the media tried to get some insight from him. That raw emotion shows a man's guts and heart, and Tharp ain't afraid to show either. That was a special moment during a special day. > read more

That leaves roughly three to four months of “downtime” to get ready. That seems like plenty of time, right? >>> read more

My Honey Badger nickname explained

Posted by admin on September 29, 2016

“Why do they call you the Honey Badger?”

Without a doubt, this is the most common question I get from fishing fans I meet at tournaments and sports shows across the country. When Dave Mercer introduces me on stage at Bassmaster Elite events he says, “He’s the Honey Badger because he don’t care!” But the reason, “because he don’t care,” is not quite enough of an explanation about my nickname. Fishing fans want to know more… >>> read more

Conflict, confidence and competition

I finished seventh at the Potomac River, and as everyone else was complaining about the heat, I absolutely loved the conditions. I’ve spent most of my life in Alabama and Florida and while the 98 degree temperatures and thick humidity can be uncomfortable, if you prepare yourself correctly they’re no big deal. >>> read more
